Mosaics have been used as a wall and floor covering since the 5th century BC.
In Ancient Greece, mosaics were made from uncut pebbles of uniform size. The Greeks invented the tessera technique (from the latin for cubes or dice). Cut into triangular, square or other regular shapes, the pieces would fit closely together into a mosaic grid.
The Greeks used mosaics for wall decoration and by varying the colour and shading they were able to imitate the style of wall paintings.
By Roman times, mosaics were mainly used for floors. The Romans developed new styles of composition and began to use perspective in their designs. Here the full potential of mosaic design was realised. Mosaics were prized for their colour and resistance to wear.
Developments in materials followed and mosaics became more colourful and varied.
The use of glass in mosaics from the 1st Century BC gave unlimited colour possibilities and from around 500 AD, gold and silver were used in mosaic designs.
Today, glazed or unglazed ceramic, glass and metals are used to manufacture mosaics. Mosaic patterns nowadays are uniform and smooth and combine well with glass, steel, and many other building materials.
